Employment and work ability in individuals living with rare diseases
Inserm and VUB are proud to share the publication of this literature review on employment and work ability in individuals living with rare diseases
People with rare diseases face significantly greater challenges employment compared to the general population. This literature review synthetizing 44 studies shows that 68% of them found that rare disease patients are less likely to be employed, and over 85% of studies found a higher risk of work disability. More perceived impairment at work was found in 100% of the studies.
The gap highlights a critical need for better workplace adaptations, employer awareness, and targeted policies to prevent social and economic exclusion. Without action, the cycle of inequality for this vulnerable group will persist.
